SEAI Grant Surge in 2026: What Solar Panels, Heat Pumps and Insulation Mean for Your Structure

By StructuralEngineer.ie ·

Applications for SEAI’s Better Energy Homes scheme jumped to 29,876 in the first six months of 2026, from 8,493 in the same period of 2025. Higher grants are driving it, including heat pump support of up to €12,500 with the Renewable Heat Bonus, and a new windows and doors grant from March 2026. StructuralEngineer.ie looks at what that wave of retrofit work means for the structure of the house.

Solar panels on the roof

PV panels and their rails add weight to the roof and, more importantly, wind uplift on the fixings. On a sound modern roof that’s rarely a problem. It’s worth an engineer’s check where:

  • the roof has been altered, such as trusses cut for an earlier attic conversion
  • an older cut roof shows sagging or has undersized rafters
  • panels are going on a flat roof with ballast, which adds more weight than fixed rails
  • the installer or the grant process asks for a structural confirmation

External wall insulation

External insulation systems are fixed through render into the wall behind. On solid brick period houses and some older blockwork, the fixing strength and the condition of the wall matter. Moisture trapped in solid walls is also a structural issue over time, which is why insulation on period houses needs care.

Heat pumps

Outdoor units are heavy and vibrate. Wall brackets need sound masonry and fixings suited to the load, and ground-mounted pads should sit clear of drains. New openings for ducts or pipes through structural walls are usually small, but check them near lintels and beams.

Windows and doors

New, larger window or door openings are structural changes. Widening an opening needs a properly sized lintel or beam. That’s especially true for big sliding doors, where the head can’t deflect more than the door maker allows.

What to do

If your retrofit involves cutting into the roof structure, making new or wider openings, or fixing heavy kit to an old wall, get it checked first. See openings for sliding doors and the period property service, or call 01 270 9764.
